Topic: Design and Synthesis of Two-Dimensional -Conjugated Polymers

Abstract

One-dimensional conjugated organic polymers are important optoelectronic materials with tunable properties and myriads of applications. Two-dimensional (2D) inorganic materials, such as graphene, display a spectrum of unprecedented properties that fundamentally impact the solid state physics. It would thus be intriguing to be able to combine the tunability of an organic polymer and 2D electron confinement in a single material – a 2D -conjugated polymer.[1] In this presentation I will summarize our recent progress in synthesis of such structures as atomically thin layers on metallic surface,[2] and as bulk layered structures (2D Covalent Organic Frameworks),[3] via dynamic solution polymerization and solid state polymerization. The lecture will highlight examples of new dynamic polymerization approaches and new, open shell building blocks, aimed at improving the electron delocalization through the 2D networks.

Biography



Dima Perepichka is Sir William MacDonald Professor of Chemistry and Chair of Chemistry Department at McGill University. He studied at Donetsk State University in Ukraine and received PhD in chemistry from the Institute of National Academy of Science of Ukraine in 1999. This was followed by post-doctoral trainings at Durham University with Martin Bryce and at UCLA with Fred Wudl. After his first independent appointment at INRS-Energy, Materials and Telecommunications in Varennes, Canada (2003), he moved to McGill University in 2005, where he was tenured in 2010 and promoted to Full Professor in 2014.

The research of his group combines tools of physical organic chemistry and surface science to design organic electronic materials, to study their structure-properties relationships and to exploit their applications in molecular and thin film devices. This work has been published in >130 papers with defining contributions in low-gap donor-acceptor dyads, thiophene-based conjugated materials, luminescent highly-mobility organic semiconductors, on-surface self-assembly and reactivity of semiconducting molecules and two-dimensional conjugated polymers. His distinctions include DuPont Young Professor Award, Excellence Award in Materials Chemistry from Canadian Society of Chemistry, Fulbright Visiting Chair at UCLA, Peng Chen Scholar at PKU Shenzhen.
